The vision and team behind Atla
Atla is an exhibition venue in Copenhagen and an online platform that promotes emerging photographic talent. Through our webshop we sell works, photo books and prints from new photographers.
The exhibition program ranges widely, both thematically and photographically. We have been dealing with contemporary thematics as representation, interpersonal relationships, memory and staging reality, queer identity and body image - with the common focal point being that we work with emerging photographers with something at heart.
Behind Atla is a team of four women with diverse backgrounds within art and documentary photography, design technology, museology and curatorship. We curate 4-5 exhibitions annually, both in our own premises and as pop-up events. In addition we host artist talks, panel discussions, book fairs, open-call based exhibitions and cross-artistic performances. Atla began as an initiative in Fotografisk Center, under the name Ungt Rum. At the beginning of 2019 we became an independent initiative and have since developed into a Nordic platform for emerging photography, with our own exhibition venue in Copenhagen and with an international aim. Atla aims to enhance the versatility of Nordic photography, and we encourage everyone, regardless of background, gender, ethnicity and sexuality, to participate in our events and open-call based initiatives. We believe that photography as an art form and tool of communication and reflection, should be accessible to everyone, both as a viewer and as a creator.
Atla has collaborated with institutions, art galleries and publishing houses such as the Photographic Center, Kbh Film and School of Photography, DMJX, Copenhagen Photo Festival, DGI-town, Basement and Disko Bay. We have shown more than 100 photographers work through our various platforms since 2018.
