BORN FREE, Kissing Couple – Wilmarie Deetlefs (24) together with her boyfriend Zakithi Buthelezi (27) on a night out in Johannesburg, South Africa. They are part of South Africa’s ‘born free’ generation. They grew up around the time of apartheids ending.
The series BORN FREE —Mandela’s Generation of Hope (2007-2019) explores the legacy and remnants of centuries of inequality in South African society. The decade-long project follows the lives of the born-frees—the first generation born (around apartheids ending) after apartheid. Born Free tells of struggle and resilience, but also of progression, from across the country, and from every layer of society incl. different faiths, social and cultural groups. The image presented here depicts a scene from a swimming team match in at boarding school Hilton College. The full series comprises hundreds of images, a documentary, video clips, a book and an interactive longread.
